Epoxy resin density

Density is the number that connects the volume of your piece with the grams of resin you have to mix and buy. Here are the typical values by resin type, the table by family, and how to convert liters to kilos without mistakes.

What density is and why you need it

Density is the weight of the resin per unit of volume, expressed in g/ml or kg/L. Your piece measurements give a volume (cm³ or liters), but resin is sold and weighed in grams: density is the bridge between the two. Without it you cannot know how many kilos to buy or how many grams of part A and part B to weigh on the scale.

Density by resin type

Crystal-clear coating resins sit around 1.10-1.12 g/ml; doming and fluid art resins are slightly lighter, around 1.08 g/ml; and deep pour resins are usually at 1.10 g/ml. The difference looks small, but on a large piece it adds up to hundreds of grams: with 8 liters of mix, going from 1.08 to 1.12 g/ml is a 320 g difference.

How to convert liters to kilos (and back)

Kilos = liters × density; liters = kilos ÷ density. For example, 2.5 liters of mix at 1.10 g/ml is 2.75 kg. Always use the density of the A+B mix from the technical datasheet, not part A alone: resin and hardener have different densities and the mix lands at an intermediate value.

Frequently asked questions

What is the density of epoxy resin?

Between 1.05 and 1.20 g/ml once mixed, depending on the formulation. As a rule of thumb 1.10 g/ml is used: a liter of mix weighs roughly 1.1 kg.

Why does the calculator need the density?

Because the piece measurements give a volume (cm³ or liters), but resin is bought and weighed in grams. Density does the conversion: grams = volume × density.

Does the density change when it cures?

Barely: resin shrinks around 1-3% in volume as it cures, so the solid piece is slightly denser than the liquid mix. For calculating amounts, always use the density of the liquid mix.

Does epoxy resin float on water?

No: its density (1.05-1.20 g/ml) is higher than water (1.00 g/ml), so it sinks. That is why a liter of resin weighs more than a liter of water.

How much does a gallon of epoxy resin weigh?

About 9.2 lb per US gallon for a typical mixed resin at 1.10 g/ml. The usual range is 8.8 to 10.0 lb/gal (1.05-1.20 g/ml). A 2-gallon kit of mixed resin therefore weighs roughly 18-19 lb.

What is epoxy resin density in lb/ft³?

Around 68.7 lb/ft³ at 1.10 g/ml, or 65.6 to 74.9 lb/ft³ across the 1.05-1.20 g/ml range. To convert, multiply the density in g/ml by 62.43.
